We usually open an account within a week - assuming all necessary account information has been submitted and the transfer of funds (appr. 2-4 days) consummated.
German law requires the identification of the account holder as part of the opening of account procedure. To do this, the bank has opted for the "Postident" service of Deutsche Post. A post representative will call on you to perform the identification. He will leave a note in case you are absent and you can then go within the next 5 days to your local post office for identification. After that period identification is assumed not to be achieved.
If you cannot come to our counters, you can be identified by third party such as notary, public city hall, embassy, consulate, or main bank of account. You would have to use the form "Auslandident" submitted to you with all the other forms and have the afore-mentioned party confirm and legitimate your signature on it. Upon request, we will be pleased to suggest appropriate parties for identification.
